- Adjacency is establish in four genneral phases:
- Neighbor discovery.
- Bidirectional communication. Quá trình này diễn ra khi 2 neighbor list each other's router ID in hello packet.
- Database synchronization.
- Database description, link state request, link state update, link state ack packet được trao đổi chắc chắn giữa neighbor have identical informaition in their link-state database. For purposes of this process, one neighbor will become the master and other will become the slave. Master router sẽ điều khiển quá trình trao đổi database description packets.
- Full adjacency.
- Neighbor được thiết lập và giữ vững nhờ quá trình trao đổi hello packets.
- Trong broadcast and point-to-point network type, hello are multicast to AllSPFRouter 224.0.0.5
- Trong NBMA, point-to-multipoint, virtual link network type, hello are unicast to individual neighbor.
- The implicantion of unicasting is tha router phải học neighbor qua cấu hình tay hoặc nhờ kỹ thuật Inverse ARP
- Inverse ARP.
2 router can't establish adjacency :
- Fail layer 2
- Fail layer 3

+ MTU (trong witch > 1500 ,or bỏ qua MTU)
